Sheet 04 / Machinery

Machinery & Capabilities

A working list of the equipment groups the workshop is built around. The detailed specification of each machine is still being finalised, so every figure below is marked TBC until the client confirms it.

Specification to be confirmed

This page is an honest working list. The workshop is new and the full specification of each machine — capacities, spindle speeds, travels, tooling and metrology equipment — will be confirmed by Chilverstone Engineering before it is published as fact. Every value that has not yet been confirmed is marked TBC.

If you need to know whether a particular size, tolerance or material is achievable, ask us directly with the drawing and we will give you a straight answer.

01 / Machine list

Equipment groups

Six groups of equipment covering turning, milling, manual work, material preparation, fabrication and inspection.

CNC Lathes

Computer-controlled turning for round components — shafts, bushes, spacers, pins and threaded parts. Used for both one-offs and repeat batches where consistency across the run matters.

CNC Machining Centres

Milling of plates, brackets, profiles and pockets, plus second-operation work on turned parts — flats, keyways, cross-holes and drilled and tapped patterns.

Manual Lathes & Milling Machines

Manual machines for one-off work, awkward set-ups, second operations and finishing where hand control is faster or more accurate than programming. Also used for reworking worn parts back to size.

Every value marked TBC is a specification to be confirmed. Nothing on this page is a published machine capability until the client has verified it.

02 / Capability

Capability summary

The headline figures a customer usually needs before sending a drawing. All values are pending confirmation of the final equipment list.

Capability summary TBL-04
Parameter Value Notes
Max turning diameter TBC Dependent on the CNC lathe specificationTo be confirmed with the machine list
Max turning length TBC Between centres, excluding bar feed workTo be confirmed with the machine list
Max milling envelope TBC X / Y / Z travels of the machining centreTo be confirmed with the machine list
Achievable tolerance TBC Quoted per feature and per material, not as a single blanket figureTo be confirmed after machine verification
Materials Mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, bronze, engineering plastics Typical list — grade and availability confirmed per job
Typical batch sizes TBC Small to medium batches; exact limits depend on the lathe and bar feedTo be confirmed
Lead times TBC Confirmed per job once drawings and quantities are knownTypical lead times to be confirmed

Specification to be confirmed — TBC values are placeholders pending the client's final machine list. Ask us about a specific job and we will confirm what is achievable.

03 / Tooling

Tooling & inspection

Tooling and measuring equipment are the part of the workshop that decides what can actually be held to size.

Cutting tooling

Turning and milling cutters, holders, drills, taps, reamers and boring bars are held to cover the materials and features described across this site. Specific tooling makes and ranges are part of the machine specification and remain TBC.

Inspection equipment

Micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height and depth gauges and setting standards are used to check dimensions during machining and on final inspection. Calibration arrangements and equipment ranges remain TBC.

04 / Honest note

If we can't do it, we'll say so

A brand-new workshop gains nothing by taking on work it cannot deliver. Knowing the limits is part of being useful.

If we can't do it in-house, we'll tell you straight away and point you in the right direction. That may mean recommending a different process, a larger machine, or another supplier better suited to the part. It is better for both of us than a job that arrives late or wrong.
